Awesome Wood Grain Effect

July 8, 2010

The internet is chock full of some pretty amazing modeling techniques. Pre-shading, post-shading, the many uses of Future floor polish, and the three-stage painting technique I’m trying out on the Fail Dauntless.

I swear I’ve probably learned more just poking around these past few weeks than I did in all my years of building models when I was younger.

But far and away, the most impressive thing I’ve seen yet is the wood painting technique developed by Eric Larson. Check out the end result on this LVG C.VI German biplane:

The propeller and fuselage are plastic, painted to look like wood.

More pictures of the build can be seen HERE, and Eric put together an extensive demo that can be found HERE.

The technique is pretty involved…but each individual step seems relatively doable.

I think I’ll have to give this a shot at some point.
