#11 – 300 (2007)

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, in 300, that word is “badass”, repeated 1,000 times per frame, at 24 frames per second. 300 is so packed full of badass that it ultimately becomes a caricature of badassness. And, really, that’s what makes it so great.

And the really sad part? Compared to most historical epics, 300 is actually pretty historically accurate. Xerxes actually did invade Greece with a massive Persian army. Leonidas actually did lead 300 Spartan hoplites to head him off. There actually was a Battle of Thermopylae. Someone named Ephialtes actually did show the Persians the goat path that led around to the Spartan rear. Leonidas actually did die. Et cetera, et cetera.

Is it stylized? Yes. Is it embellished? Yes. But it’s an embellishment of the actual historical record. In a way, it feels like a pretty accurate representation of the Spartan legend, the John Wayne version of how things went down, of how they would have wanted it remembered.

Whatever the case, it’s still badass.
