Top 25 Films of the 2000s – #13

#13 – The Dark Knight (2008)

I imagine The Dark Knight will probably be finding it’s way into a lot of these “best movies of the decade” lists. And it should. As a movie, it’s a tour de force. Maybe the best superhero movie ever made, and certainly the weightiest. Few superhero movies are as morally gray and thematically complex as The Dark Knight. Few are as beautiful-yet-gritty. Few are as well-acted (well, excepting Christian Bale, who always seems like he’s only half paying attention because he really has to get to a bathroom).

And yet, for all it’s mastery, for all it’s epic scale, for all that it took the Joker in a completely different direction from anything we’ve seen on the screen before…I didn’t enjoy The Dark Knight. In a way, it reminds me of Schlinder’s List. Both are good…even great…movies, but at the same time, neither is exactly the sort you pop in to kick back and relax with. There’s nothing warm and fun about The Dark Knight. It’s meant to be an uncomfortable, challenging movie, and that’s exactly what it is. But that’s also exactly why I didn’t rank it higher.

    Pray what is complicated about this movie?

    Joker = Evil
    Costumed vigilantes with more firepower than a company of Marines, extraordinary rendition and unauthorized cell phone wiretaps [1] = Good

    Seemed pretty simple to me.

    [1] Actually, can you really call them “wiretaps” if they’re cell phones?

      THEMATICALLY complex. In that it deals with themes weightier and more ambiguous than those found in your typical action/sci-fi/superhero movie. I.E. anarchy vs. order, whether human decency is a social construct, etc etc.
