One Word at a Time

June 2, 2008

The first draft of The Scourge of Rome came in at something like 260,000 words.

After heavy revisions, it emerged in April at a svelte 183,000.

As of this morning, with three chapters left to go, it’s down to 168,027.

Wow, you’ve really sliced and diced. What novel is comparable to the new size?

I’m not sure, exactly, but to give you an idea, Jeff Shaara’s “Rise to Rebellion”, about the lead-up to the American Revolution, is around 189,000, and comes in at 512 pages (hardcover). Of course, words per page vary from book to book, so it’s tough to get an exact comparison. Going from an average of 395 words per page, it’d be about 440 pages or so.
