Today Is Not the 4th of July

July 4, 2007

The calendar may say July 4, 2007, but it doesn’t matter.  Today isn’t the 4th of July.  It can’t be.

Why, you ask?

This is why:

It’s 3 PM on July 4th – in Texas!  It should be dry and sunny, with temperatures anywhere from 95 to 105.  Not 75!  Not raining!  This is Austin, not Portland!

At this rate, who knows what will happen next?  A naval battle in Nevada?  The Rangers winning the World Series?  A Republican winning the White House in 2008?

Vancouver has warmer weather. It’s sunny and 80 degrees…a heat wave. But 35 degrees cooler than Phoenix today.

    And the kicker is this:

Friday, I’m in Phoenix, having just gone through an entire week of 110+ weather (116 being the peak). It was only cooling off to 95 at night. But this was OK, because that night I was flying to Wisconsin to visit Beth’s family in the north woods of Wisconsin, where highs had been around 75 for the last week. They told me to bring a jacket for nights, when it actually got quite cool.

I land in Milwaukee at midnight, check into a hotel (it was too late for the 3 hour drive north). The local newscast? Record heat wave, starting Saturday.

So I spent yesterday at the cabin in the woods. 95 degrees. Humid. AND NO AIR CONDITIONING. In a house that is built to hold heat in during the tough winters. (Not to mention a balky septic tank.)

So, lesson one: I’m cursed. Lesson two: A dry 116 with A/C kicks ass over humid 95 with NO A/C. This sucks.

I’m going to peel my smelly, sticky self away from the computer now …
