Volvo Discovers Design

December 14, 2006

What words would you use to describe Volvo?

Safe?  Conservative?  Swedish?

How about cool?

Though I’ve been a fan of Volvo for some time, finding their cars competent, well-thought-out, and possessed of a certain handsomeness, I’ve never thought of them as being particularly cool.

But that may be changing.  Volvo, it seems, has discovered design.

Take, for example, the C30.  Due to arrive in the U.S. next summer, this diminutive hatchback is set to compete against the likes of the Mini Cooper and Volkswagen GTI.  It remains unmistakably a Volvo, but manages to take the brand’s design language in an interesting new direction.

More impressive still is the XC60, a compact SUV meant to slot below the larger XC90 and compete with the likes of the BMW X3, Acura RDX, and Land Rover LR2.  Rather than simply shrinking the XC90, Volvo seems to be taking a more radical route with the new SUV’s design.  Below is the XC60 Concept, which is set to debut in Detroit next month.  While this is not the production model (we will have to wait until 2008 for that), the exterior, at least, is said to be extremely close to what we will see when it hits the streets.

If Volvo can carry even half of this concept’s lines over to the production model…

Just posting because, well, all these car posts never get any replies and I felt sort of bad for them.
