What’s Going On? Where Am I? Why is Everyone Wearing a Fleece Vest?

November 3, 2006

The new REI opened today.  I and my coworkers have been anticipating this day for some time, as it means an end to at least some of the construction taking place beneath our feet*.

What we did not anticipate what that other people would anticipate the opening.  I mean, it’s an REI.

Imagine our surprise, then, when we stepped out around 9:45 this morning and saw a line of people waiting to get into the store.  A line of people that, I kid you not, went around the block.

I don’t get it.  I mean…it’s an REI…not an Apple Store or an IKEA…and it’s not even the first REI in Austin.  So what’s the big deal?  Do people wait in line when a new Best Buy or Old Navy opens up?

* For clarification, my place of employment has shipped some of us over to the old Whole Foods headquarters, which happens to be located directly above the old Whole Foods store, which has been transformed into a new REI and a new Anthropologie.
