What Might Have Been…

November 3, 2006

The SEMA Show, the auto industry’s big aftermarket extravaganza, is taking place in Las Vegas this week.   Players from across the industry are there, from the automakers themselves to electronics suppliers, offroad companies, performance tuners…you get the idea.

Of all of the vehicles on display, I find this retro FJ Cruiser to be one of the most interesting.  As the story goes, Toyota had it built as a one-off several years ago, and it was the vehicle that inspired the FJ Cruiser that seems to be popping up all over the place, at least here in Austin.

Personally, I’d have rather seen them take a little more inspiration from the one-off FJ.  It strikes me as a far more genuine homage to the venerable FJ40 of days past, and with a few styling tweaks I think would have made a far more attractive production vehicle than the bubble-tastic FJ Toyota ended up with.  But…judge for yourself.

My boss has an FJ – they are pretty nice. He loves it. He was offroading with a friend who owns the local Toyota Dealer and had his own loaded FJ and the Dealer flipped it. It was all caught on video phone – very funny.
