Road Trip Day 2 – Sweet Home Alabama

July 15, 2006

Welcome to the second day of our epic road trip!  Today, Jamie and I will be making our way across Mississippi and Alabama before entering Georgia and reaching Atlanta (which is apparently a major distribution hub for crystal meth – who knew?).

Along the way, we’re planning to stop in Tuscaloosa (the second most fun-to-pronounce city in the United States, after Chattanooga) to see some old house.  I make it sound really dramatic, don’t I?  In all seriousness, it is a really old house.

We will also be stopping at the Irondale Cafe, a small eating establishment east of Birmingham that has the distinction of being the cafe on which they modelled the cafe in Fried Green Tomatoes.  That fact has some significance to Jamie, but as all I know about the film is that Driving Miss Daisy was in it and Kathy Bates gets all pissy and rams someone’s car, I could care less.   I just hope the food’s good.

The terrain should also improve as we come out of Birmingham and the elevation begins to change.  Be sure to keep an eye out on Flickr.  I’ll be uploading pictures as the opportunities arise.

You forgot the best part about Fried Green Tomatoes. Although identified as one of the ultimate chick flicks, they actually barbecue up the bad guy and eat him.

No, I’m not kidding. Go watch it again. Somehow, we’ve all deleted this from our collective unconscious, and it’s a shame.
