Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea

July 14, 2005

After four days (Nice, Monte Carlo, Le Lavendou, and Cannes), we bid adieu to the French Riviera last night. Today we spent at sea, heading toward Menorca, one of the Balearic Islands (the others being Mallorca and Ibiza).

I must confess, I have no idea what to expect from Menorca. All I know of the Balearic Islands is that they used to provide some of the finest slingers in the ancient world. Yes, slingers, as in guys who sling rocks. You know, David and Goliath. But he was a Jew, not a Balearic Islander. Though I’m sure there are probably some Jews on Menorca.

So there you have it. That is the extent of my knowledge about the island chain. That, and it was fought over in the Middle Ages, probably conquered by Normans at some point, and is today a popular vacation destination for Europe and Michael Douglas.

Pictures to come and whatnot. In the meantime, enjoy the recent uploads. I apologize for the lack of pictures from Cannes – but the film festival resort town was somewhat anticlimactic after the greatness that was Nice.

Perhaps I was too quick in my judgement of France. But Nice would have to be exempted.
