About Time…

April 19, 2005

In 1997, Jeep unveiled its Dakar concept vehicle, which was essentially a four-door, hard-top Wrangler.  It was a great concept, and one that everyone figured Jeep would build.  It was a no-brainer.

Alas, the Dakar remained a concept and never saw production.  Instead, Jeep went forward with its KJ platform, which became the Liberty.  The Liberty is a good enough vehicle, but many, myself included, wish that Jeep had built the Dakar instead.

Well, now it looks like they are going to, just ten years late.  It was announced today that the new Jeep Wrangler will come in the traditional 2-door, the long-wheelbase Unlimited, and an all-new four-door variant when it arrives in 2006.

That’s right.  They are finally building a four-door Wrangler.  Chances are, with all the new safety mandates, it will be a hard top.  Just like the Dakar.

Now, nobody’s actually seen this new 4-door, but if they execute it properly, it could become a serious contender for next vehicle, whenever that time may come.
