Sahara

April 13, 2005

If you’ve seen the trailer for the recently-released "Sahara", you’ve probably thought to yourself, "that sure looks silly".

Well, it is silly.  It is absolutely, 100% preposterous.  But it works as a movie because it recognizes this.  The characters know how unlikely their situations are, and their expressions of incredulity when their plans actually work help sell the movie.

You’ve likely been in some action movie before, where the hero will take out the bad guy by firing a missile in one side of a building and out the other, or do something else equally unlikely.  And, upon seeing such a feat, you’ve probably told yourself, "there’s no way that should have worked."  Well, in one such scene in Sahara, Matthew McConaughey and Steve Zahn turn to each other and say, in unison, "there’s no way that should have worked."

Don’t get me wrong, Sahara is no "Raiders of the Lost Ark".  It is, however, good fun, and an excellent escape for two hours of stress relief.

Highly recommended.

I can’t watch any movie with McConaughey for fear that he might reenact his nude bongo routine.
