Children Charged With Felonies Over Violent Drawings

Two boys, ages 9 and 10, were charged with felonies and taken away from school in handcuffs, accused of making violent drawings of stick figures.

The boys were arrested Monday on charges of making a written threat to kill or harm another person, a second-degree felony. The special education students used pencil and red crayon to draw primitive stick figure scenes on scrap paper that showed a 10-year-old classmate being stabbed and hung, police said.

Incidents such as this are why I think I would prefer living in the 18th century, or heck, even the 1980’s.

Every boy draws stick figures in violent situations.  Being pierced by arrows, shot by guns, blown up by missiles.  I did.  Everyone I knew growing up did.  It was just the way of things.  Like how all the girls liked dolls and My Little Pony.

Now…these drawings may have gone a bit over the line by actually being used to scare another child…but a friggin’ felony?  Are you kidding me?  Can nine and ten year-olds even be charged with felonies?

In my day, I think this would have sparked a parent-teacher conference.  Maybe a loss of recess privileges or something.  But, my God, certainly not a felony.

When did we become such a nation of oversensitive wusses?  We’re going to be very far up a very brown creek when the day comes that we actually have to face up to our problems and deal with things on our own.
