Twenty-Five

December 13, 2004

Well, today is my twenty-fifth birthday.  I am now, officially, a quarter of a century old.  It is a rather uneventful birthday (aren’t they all after 21?) – the major change being demographic.  I am no longer a part of the 18-24 market that advertisers court so aggressively.

Something to consider: Publius Cornelius Scipio was twenty-five when he was awarded a proconsular commission by the Senate to defeat the Carthaginian’s in Spain.  The same command his father and uncle had held when they were both killed in Spain only a year earlier.  At his age, he should only have (maybe) been eligible for a military tribuneship.  This commission was the sort normally awarded to men who had already attained the consulship, the highest office in the Roman Republic.  And yet it was given to Scipio, when he was twenty-five.

Kind of puts that day off of work that I get in perspective, doesn’t it?
