Defender Go Bye Bye

September 8, 2004

After all the vacillating, that time has finally arrived. This weekend, I break out the tools and set about installing a few things, uninstalling others, and generally getting the Defender ready to sell.

When I first considered selling it, the idea was to use the proceeds to buy something else, something cheaper, and pocket the profits. An old Range Rover (talk about depreciation!) or something.

These days, things are different. Between a job, a wife, three dogs, a novel-in-progress, and a myriad of interests, I can’t justify the temporal or financial investment in offroading any longer. Its fun, but I have other priorities now. If you can believe it, the Defender’s all but sat in my garage since November. Come Saturday, I’m going to have to move dog kennels, exercise balls, bikes, tents, and folding chairs to back it into the driveway.

So, this time, when the Defender sells, nothing will take its place, and my days of offroading will come to an end.

This is truly the end of an era. Let us not forget the days when we would sit in the red defender, or the blue silverado, or the green defender, or the yellow defender , drink slurpees, and talk about the cosmos. I say this partially in jest of course, but partially with complete and utter seriousness. We’ve been through a lot in those various vehicles….remember when you and I would go out to Cottonwood Park or one of those other parks, chill in the defender or on a picnic table, and just talk the night away about whatever it was that was bothering one of us that week? … Do you remember when you jared and I sat in the back of the Silverado the day before we left for college and discussed what it all would mean? I mean those times are classic…that’s our youth..and offroading was in many ways a part of it….it’s the end of an era to be sure.

Perhaps it has to do with the fact that most of what was bothering us had to do with girls…and now that I’m married…maybe that has something to do with it…
