More Reviews

Shrek 2 – Excellent. Perhaps not quite on par with the original, but this one lacked the benefit of being an absolute surprise. Antonio Banderas was good, but by no means the show-stealer people have hyped him to be. Definitely worth seeing, ESPECIALLY if you are a fan of the first Shrek.

The Last Samurai– I never got around to seeing this in theaters, so last night Jamie and I rented it. It was better than its reviews, I thought, and definitely is done a disservice when it is called “Dances with Wolves” in Japan. Tom Cruise was fantastic, as was the rest of the cast, though I did not think Ken Watanabe was the ‘revelation’ he was touted to be. It should be noted that The Last Samurai got more right about the Meiji Restoration and the end of the feudal age in Japan than did my feminist-taught course on, well, feudal Japan. I am not sure whether that is a terrible insult to that terrible professor, or glowing praise for a typically awful Hollywood…

Both are much better than Troy.
