Robert McKee

May 4, 2004

So today the agency brought in Robert McKee, famed writing instructor/consultant, to help us tell stories to existing and potential clients, rather than just throw around Power Point decks. All for that, but I was listening as a writer, not as an employee.

Overall, McKee was great. As with Pressfield and The War of Art, it wasn’t so much what he said, but how he said it. The art, after all, is in the presentation.

But the best may be yet to come. Our department director, who put the whole thing together, took off early for some reason, leaving McKee without a dinner date. Who’s been tapped to take him out instead? None other than yours truly. And my boss, of course. Three hours, one on one with the writing guru who has taught everyone from Charlie Kaufman to Peter Jackson to Steven Pressfield? Yes, please.

So, there is a good possibility that I will be having dinner with Robert McKee tonight. Cross your fingers.
